Message from the Mayor

Two years ago Prime Minister Harper announced that Huntsville would host the G8 World Summit in June of 2010. At that time the Town of Huntsville had just completed a six month community visioning process that culminated in our Community Master Plan. That exercise pulled together input from all facets of the community to set a list of priorities for the future needs of Huntsville.

It became apparent that the most important part of the G8 event could be the legacy that such an event would leave for Huntsville, the host community.  With a blueprint of priorities hot off the press in the Community Master Plan, we approached the Federal Government to assist us in building a multiuse expansion of our community center that would provide needed space for  the G8 and thereafter meet some of our Master Plan  objectives.

On February 12, 2009, Minister Tony Clement announced that the Town of Huntsville was successful in its application to receive federal assistance with the construction of our community center expansion, now dubbed the “Canada Summit Centre”.  Since that announcement and in time for the commencement of the G8 Summit this facility has been designed, engineered, approved, tendered, constructed, landscaped and commissioned.  This tight schedule was completed in about half the time such a project would normally require thanks to the efforts of all involved.  Part of the benefit of this timing was that the economy had suffered a severe blow worldwide and the stimulus of this construction activity greatly assisted our community through those very tough economic times.

Early in this term of Council, we embarked on a feasibility study assessing post secondary school opportunities for Huntsville. After that study was complete some very creative thinkers in our community approached the University of Waterloo to discuss options for establishing a UW presence in our community.  Once again we were able to receive financial assistance from the G8 Legacy Fund to allow the Town of Huntsville to build a center for Environmental and Ecosystem Resilience Research here in Huntsville.  The Community Master Plan had identified this goal as another prime objective for our community.

Two other projects were completed with funds from the G8 Legacy Fund. They included the reconstruction of Deerhurst Drive and some great beautification of the Port Sydney waterfront.

In addition to these two significant projects, we have completed quite a number of other projects over the past year.  Some of these projects were funded with the Infrastructure program that involved the Federal and Provincial Governments in partnership with the town of Huntsville. They include the rebuilding of Hanes Road, a new Firehall in Port Sydney and a new outdoor sports facility at Conroy Park.

So it had been an extremely busy time for us preparing for the G8 World Summit. It was not an easy task, we approached it with the knowledge that we have worked hard along with our partner, the Federal Government, to prepare for this auspicious occasion. The people of Huntsville also came together to ensure that our community succeeded in not only in welcoming the world, but also maximizing this tremendous opportunity to facilitate growth, progress, and prosperity.

This past year will be remembered as an extremely significant time in Huntsville’s history and as your Mayor, I would like thank all our partners and the residents of Huntsville for helping to make it an incredible success.

Claude Doughty,
Mayor
Town of Huntsville

Canada Summit Centre

The Centennial Centre expansion in Huntsville is now complete and has been coined the name "Canada Summit Centre".

Over the last fifteen months the facility has been designed, engineered, approved, tendered, constructed, landscaped and commissioned – about half the time such a project would normally require thanks to the efforts of all involved.

Some of the key features of the new facility include: a new façade for the entire complex as well as impressive entry way and lobby, improvements to the pool area and the addition of a new Olympic size multi use arena. In the fall of 2010, the facility will add a full time café, a fitness facility as well as multi-use spaces. In addition, the Active Living Centre is slated for a late fall completion, which will be constructed on the east side of the centre and feature a large facility for seniors, youth organizations as well as a main floor banquet facility.
